Currency and Economy(top)
Before the Days of Fire there were many currencies used in the area now known as the Northern Alliance. The main Qadaq currency, the silver and gold Talent was a universally accepted coinage that set the economy throughout the entire republic. At its centre in the capital of Remus, the republic mints churned out vast quantities of these coins and used them to fuel the vast economy of Qadaq. The Talent was always intended to be used for large scale transactions and as such many of the larger coins were actually oblong not round.
As you travelled father from the capital however, the many countries and nations that lived under the umbrella of Qadaq still had their own coinage that was used within their own borders but this was almost always superseded in value by the Talent. Nevertheless it still existed alongside the stronger coins and generally found a way to work in tandem with exchange rates being set by the various governments, kings and warlords.
At the very furthest borders of the republic the Talent was still used but a greater number of other currencies existed and at the edge of Qadaq’s power they were less controlled and less tied to the Talent.
In the Kingdom, there were and are a number of coins used for trade, although barter is still common amongst ordinary people. The Middle Kingdom currency of the golden Lions, silver Eagles and copper Falcons was a commonly used currency throughout the realm and The Theocracy beyond. It was a widely accepted currency for trade with the merchant princes of Tyrras and Toleda. This was not the only coinage used in the Kingdom but by far the most prevalent and widely accepted.
In the west, The Theocracy had a single currency. The gold Daris and silver Siglos was used, and still is, to exchange services and goods between temples and cities. This was used in conjunction with the Kingdom currency and other coins from other western nations to keep a small but stable economy going in the land of the gods. The Talent was intentionally used very little here so as to keep the separation of church and state secure. A few Talents, however, were used by traders passing through to take ship from Almitra.
Nordland coins have only ever been accepted within their own borders. It is an isolated land with self-imposed enemies all around. The gold mines of the mountain ranges and the western silver mines on the coast produce enough precious metal for the noble clans to strike a currency comprised of gold Hammers and silver Anvils. Unusually many northern coins have holes so that they may be kept on strings. These coins are used in all parts of the north to buy and trade in the tundra and the fjords for goods, food and services. It has historically never been used beyond their own borders. Now that the Northern Alliance has been formed however, small amounts of this coinage has been making its way south. Due to the quality of the metals in the coins many traders have started to accept this currency at a variable rate of exchange for Talents, Lions and Eagles.
There are many more local currencies that exist in the world and to name them all would take far too long. Suffice to say that this far from the centre of the republic it was always a matter of many nations and communities trading using a huge range of local and national currency. Each nation set rates of exchange that represented a fair and decent price for goods received.
Guild Currency(top)
When the magical guilds came into being under royal patent, they announced that they would be issuing their own, magical, coins. That these coins were backed by the prestige and wealth of The Guilds. The Guilds would only allow people to purchase their goods and services with guild coins. In the Vale, only guild coins have any real use since they are required to interact with The Guilds which is the main purpose of the expedition.
The king seems to have a plentiful supply of guild coins and has provided the duchess with the means to pay her forces with them.
Guild Coinage(top)
The Guild coinage consists of the following denominations:
- The Hare (silver)
- The Boar (silver)
- The Stag (silver)
- The Pegasus (gold)
- The Gryphon (gold)
- The Dragon (gold)
In the silver coins there are three hares to a boar and four boars to a stag. A pegasus is worth two and a half stags, a gryphon is worth five stags and a dragon is worth four gryphons.
